LIVING HELL - OBLIVION

What a crushing album. Seriously, I feel like my rib cage is about to cave in whenever I put on the record. This latest effort is my favorite from Living Hell. It sounds so good. I tend to be turned off by the sound of band's later records, they tend to be compressed to a lifeless pulse, but this album seems to have room to breathe. I wish other bands in this vein of Hardcore would follow suit. Sure, it's not the smidgen louder that it could be - but it sounds better. This behemoth is the soundtrack to giant apes stomping through your city, picking you up and effortlessly rendering you limb from limb. The slow, heavy riffs are joined together by some rage-inducing fast parts and hate-releasing mosh parts. I believe all the tracks on this record are all new songs, which I greatly appreciate. Though I still love their older material, it's great to finally hear more than a handful of new songs. The lyrics, like the music, are dark and heavy, dealing mainly with personal torment, conflicts in relationships, and of course humanity's self-condemning actions. Craig Mack's low, almost raspy vocals reflect those themes perfectly. You can still hear their love for Integrity on this record, but they've become more than just a worship band. They've grown from the seeds planted by albums like Seasons In the Size of Days & Humanity Is The Devil, but have come to bear their own black and twisted fruit. If you don't pick this up, you're missing out. This album should be considered a heavy weight contender for top 10 records of 2009.
